BC Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono, the 2006 Sportexe CFL Coach of the Year, has been named as the CFL’s Coach of the Year for the third time in his coaching career by 46 voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC). Buono received 34 votes in winning the award which recognizes the commitment and efforts of head coaches across the league, with special honours going to the coach who most demonstrates exceptional leadership, discipline and dedication to excellence during the regular season.

Although the University of Houston, led by Sportexe NCAA Division I-A Coach of the Year winner Art Briles, fell short 44-36 to Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina Gamecocks in the Autozone Liberty Bowl on Friday, Dec. 29, the Cougars fought to wire in what was one of the most exciting games in the 2006 bowl season.

Sportexe National High School Coach of the Year Bill Redell, head coach of Oaks Christian in Westlake Village, Calif., will participate on the Army All-American Bowl coaching staff on Saturday, Jan. 6, in San Antonio for the annual high school all-star game. The Bowl features the nation’s top 80 high school football players, in an East versus West showdown. The game will be nationally televised on NBC.
